a great read for any creative 📚

Yesterday morning, I picked up this book and decided to read it. It has been sat on my bookshelf for a couple of months, having been gifted by a lovely and thoughtful person (thank you).

It is a well-structured, informative, and inspiring book that has challenged the way I consider sharing my art projects online. It's very nice to have a quick-read, practical guide to this; and the book also happens to be a lovely object to own. I recommend it; and would love to hear your thoughts.

One point that struck and excited me is the idea of documenting art projects - filming and photographing works in progress, and also sharing the inspiration behind them. I realised that this is the content I most enjoy from creatives I follow, so I'm going to try sharing more from behind the scenes.

Kleon points out that the definition of amateur is 'a lover of'. I love doing creative things; it makes me happy. I hope that this enjoyment comes across in the work I do. ♡

I made this sketched watercolour postcard set back in december, for a lovely colleague's secret santa gift. I love choosing and giving gifts, but homemade gifts often feel like quite a gamble. I wasn't sure if the recipient would like these or if it was the right type of gift to give! but luckily she was very pleased - so much that she is having them framed, which makes me very very happy.

excitingly, I'm working on a couple of commissions at the moment! and a couple of little knitting projects.

I made this rather homemade-looking but very cosy @novitaknits Hyggehuuma Sweater in very soft, super chunky merino yarn from @millamia_sweden 🧶 I had a lot of fun beginning my knitting journey with this lovely jumper pattern and feel sure that this is just the start of a lifelong love of knitting!

this lovely little pub was opposite the main entrance to my college in oxford, and I couldn't help but paint it. swipe to see work in progress pics.

the original painting now belongs to @art.by.shamsi - we did a painting swap, so he has this and I have a lovely piece of the radcliffe camera that he did for me.

now I'm in london I'm excited to do some more paintings like this. I have a list of places I want to paint next, but am very open to suggestions! where next? 🤔

it was quite a while since I had used my sketchbook, but when I met up with my friend aniq in london, I was very glad that I remembered to bring it.

aniq was my first friend in oxford and was an excellent friend during my time there (and has continued to be since). we used to sketch together on sundays and once did a very lovely painting swap. I miss those times!

aniq is much more practiced than I am and has a wonderful sketching page, @art.by.shamsi - go and take a look.

around a year ago, I had the joy of taking a pottery evening for a few months. I loved it a lot, and this is one of the things I made.

the previous christmas, my dad made and gifted me this gorgeous pottery house (swipe to see). you put a tealight inside and the light shines through the windows. I think it is so beautiful.

I found and bought some little pillar candles on holiday that summer. they smell divine, but I didn't have anything lovely that they could sit in.

so I made myself this little holder, inspired by my dad's design and using the same glazes as he did. now I think they make a really lovely set ♡

My Mum and I had a little Christmas Eve crafternoon making these little felted mice. Mine is wrapped up in a cosy jumper, and hers is skiing. They're on our tree now!

I love being part of the local church flower club when I'm home, and a tradition and highlight of every year is Christmas Eve Eve, when we all make a festive arrangement (as well as having lots of tea, chats and mince pies!).

This year, mine has lots of gorgeous greenery from my mum's garden and some sparkly extras to bring some Christmas cheer ✨️

I love pottery and was lucky enough to take an evening last year. I handbuilt these mugs and tumblers and used a monoprinting glaze technique, inspired by the beautiful drystone walls of derbyshire.

I often spot things I'd love to linoprint when I have time. it's nice being reminded of a fun hobby I have while living my normal life. it's also nice because that way, my prints take me back to the exact moment I had the idea to make them.

this is mr chippy. it was parked in a layby as I was setting off on one of my favourite country walks. it's one of the first prints I did with cranfield ink - I'd love to revisit the block and print it again now I have better paper and am a bit more used to it. new year project?

a peek inside my sketchbook 👀

while I was finishing my mst at the university of oxford, I'd take 3 min study breaks and sketch something ordinary in this tiny little book. they were often one-line drawings (although I remember the final example here took a few breaks).

drawing fully immersed me for a few minutes, so it was a pretty successful break. it also made sure I was present when walking out and about, because I was always on the lookout for what to draw next. highly recommend buying a lil book and giving it a go.

oatly - whole? 🥛

one of my earlier lino prints, and one of my only dual-colour prints. it's very rough around the edges, not least because it's before I bought better tools and lino and ink, but I still like it.

I love the taste of Oatly but struggle with the controversy around it, never knowing whether it's actually an environmentally-friendly choice or just a bit greenwashy. that's why I made this 'whole' carton split in two.

I'd quite like to revisit this design and remake it with better lino/tools/ink and a bit more experience...and potentially on paper made by me. maybe a challenge for the new year.

I loved this challenge to create a musical flower display as part of a local Arts Festival in September. Making the paper roses was time consuming, but well worth it when I stepped back to see how well they blended in with the real ones!
